Congressman Tierney is deeply concerned about prescription drug safety. Recent studies have shown that nearly half of all Americans are taking at least one prescription drug on a daily basis, and about 20 percent are taking at least three. These figures, combined with increased rates of abuse of prescription drugs such as OxyContin and Dexedrine among our nation's youth, have made Congressman Tierney dedicated to taking the steps necessary to vigilantly monitor the prescription drug market and protect the health of American consumers.

In that vein, Congressman Tierney has introduced bipartisan legislation, the FDA Safety Act (H.R. 788), that restructures the FDA by setting up a new, independent entity within the agency to review prescription drugs once they are on the market. Congressman Tierney's bill also grants the FDA significant new authorities necessary to effectively regulate drug safety.
