Congressman Tierney has been fighting to enact legislation that would require electric utilities to acquire 20% of their electricity from wind, solar and other renewable energy sources by 2020. Doing so, he believes, would bring our country closer to energy independence and further spur development in the renewable energy industry. Further, Congressman Tierney notes that the initiative would protect consumers against fossil fuel price increases. According to a study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, a national renewable portfolio standard could save consumers money by reducing natural gas prices.
