October 2007

Dear Seniors:

Historically the fall is known as harvest season. A time our forefathers took to gather up the riches from the summer growing season, and a time we can now take to take stock of our pantries in preparation for the winter months. The season is a good reminder to all of us about the importance of nutrition, and I wanted to share with you an update on recent congressional action on this issue.

It is my sincere hope that all of you are taking the necessary steps to keep yourselves well! Staying in shape – maybe by taking a stroll to enjoy some leaf-peeping – and eating well are paramount to a quality life. In that vein, as an active member of the House Education and Labor Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Older Americans Act, I remain committed to supporting healthy lifestyles for all seniors.

I am pleased to inform you that, on January 31, 2007, the House considered the Fiscal Year 2007 Revised Continuing Appropriations Resolution (H.J.Res. 20), which included an increase of approximately $20 million in funding for congregate and home-based meal programs under the Older Americans Act. This important funding will help to ensure adequate support for and attention to our nation's senior nutrition programs. I was pleased to vote in favor of H.J.Res. 20 when it came to the floor for a vote. The measure passed by a vote of 286-140 and has since been signed into law as Public Law 110-5.

Be assured that, as we move forward, I shall keep working with like-minded colleagues to craft fiscal policies that reflect the shared values of the nation, including appropriate support for our nation’s seniors and your nutrition and wellness needs.

Finally, if you are interested in celebrating the fall harvest with your community, note that many towns and cities celebrate the season with Fall Harvest Festivals that can include fine music, farm fresh food and scarecrow making. To find more information about festivities in your area inquire at your local town or city hall. Also, consider visiting your local farm stands to indulge in local produce.

As always, I encourage you to contact me with any questions you may have. Please contact Cheryl Gresek, my Constituent Service Representative, at (978) 531-1669.

Sincerely,

John F. Tierney
Member of Congress
