Key Veterans Provisions Co-Authored by Congressman Tierney Pass House
Washington, DC- Last night, the House of Representatives passed a series of bipartisan bills aimed at helping our nation’s veterans and their families. As part of the package, the House passed the Veterans Economic Opportunity Act of 2013 (H.R. 2481). This bill includes key provisions from legislation authored by Congressman John Tierney and Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) that significantly expand home foreclosure protections for servicemembers, disabled veterans and their families. The bill passed unanimously in the House and now moves to the Senate for consideration.
“Our veterans and their family members have made enormous sacrifices and we should be doing everything in our power to support and protect them. This bipartisan legislation ensures that servicemembers who are deployed overseas and veterans who are recovering from combat injuries are not subjected to illegal foreclosure, inflated fees or other financial abuses. Those who have given so much to protect and defend our country certainly deserve these kinds of legal protections,” said Congressman Tierney.
"Under current law, certain servicemembers, veterans with disabilities, and surviving spouses are not receiving the critical protections they need, and banks are foreclosing on them at the very moment when our heroes and their families deserve our support. These common-sense provisions will better protect military families and veterans with disabilities by closing loopholes and providing needed reforms to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. I want to thank Rep. John Tierney in particular for his leadership on this issue and many others as the top Democrat on the Subcommittee on National Security, where he has been at the forefront of congressional efforts to protect the interests of active duty servicemembers and honor the service of our nation's veterans," said Congressman Cummings.
The foreclosure protection provisions included in the Veterans Economic Opportunity Act derive from legislation that Congressmen Tierney and Cummings introduced earlier this year entitled the Military Family Home Protection Act (H.R. 1842). Additionally, these provisions are supported by a number of key military and veteran’s organizations, including the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Military Officers Association of American, Gold Star Wives of America, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
