Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Congressman John F. Tierney (D-MA) announced $500,000 in State and Tribal Assistance Grant (STAG) Water and Wastewater Infrastructure funding for upgrades at Gloucester's Essex Avenue Wastewater Facility. This assistance, included in the final version of the Fiscal Year 2010 Department of Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriation Act, will help save city taxpayers from bearing the full cost of efficiency upgrades and improvements. The bill was approved by a vote of 247 to 178 by the House yesterday afternoon, with Senate approval announced last evening. This bill is expected to be signed into law shortly by President Obama.
"Gloucester's project was one of only five water projects in Massachusetts, and one of only 25 in all of New England, to receive funding in this spending bill," said Congressman John F. Tierney. "I trust that this assistance, along with the pending application for $17.3 million in Clean Water State Revolving Funds provided under the federal recovery act passed by Congress earlier this year and any financing at the local level, will significantly help in addressing Gloucester's capital repair needs." Since being elected to Congress, Tierney has secured a total of $7.1 million in STAG funding for 6th District communities. Of those funds, $1,029,839 has gone to the City of Gloucester. Essex County has received the third highest total of Massachusetts funding in recent years, with Boston being the top recipient largely due to the Boston Harbor clean-up. - 30 -
