New Student Loan Changes

As a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor, Congressman Tierney has consistently worked to ensure that every qualified student has the opportunity to obtain a higher education.  Nothing could be more important than investing in our future and providing our students with an affordable, quality education.

In 2007, Congressman Tierney helped author the College Cost Reduction Act, which contained a number of provisions to reduce the debt burden of students and their families, including provisions cutting Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan interest rates in half and expanding federal loan forgiveness programs.

On July 1, 2009 several new student loan benefits take effect, including a further reduction on Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan interest rates, an Income-Based Repayment (IBR) option for federal loan borrowers, and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

For more information on these new benefits, please see the attached.
