Congressman Tierney to Speak on House Floor Today on His Bill to Stop Student Loan Interest Rates from Doubling
April 26, 2012
Washington DC – Today, Congressman John Tierney will speak on the House floor in support of his bill (H.R. 4618) to keep student loan interest rates at 3.4% for the next year by ending Big Oil subsidies. On the House floor, Tierney will push Congress to bring his bill for a vote. Congressman Tierney is expected to speak between 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm, which will broadcast live on C-Span.
"GOP priorities are once again out of touch with the issues that matter to our middle-class families, and their legislation takes the wrong approach. It reduces student loan rates by cutting important health care prevention funds for women and children. My bill presents the better and fairer solution and is completely paid for by ending tax subsidies for Big Oil. I call on the House GOP leadership to shelve their irresponsible bill and pass the Stop the Rate Hike Act of 2012," Congressman Tierney said.
If Congress does not take action, more than 7 million students nation-wide and some 177,000 in MA will see their student loan interest rates double on July 1st.
